With raw scores of 32 in Listening (Band 7.5) and 30 in Academic Reading (Band 7.0), plus Writing Band 6.5 and Speaking Band 7.0, the average is 7.0, giving an overall IELTS band of 7.0.

Understanding the IELTS Band Scoring System

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), administered by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English, is the world’s most widely recognized English proficiency test for international study, work, and migration.

Test takers receive individual band scores ranging from 0 to 9 for four core communication skills:

  1. Listening (40 questions)
  2. Reading (40 questions, Academic or General Training)
  3. Writing (Task 1 and Task 2)
  4. Speaking (Face-to-face interview)

Understanding how raw question marks translate into skill bands, and how the arithmetic average rounds to your overall band, is essential when preparing for visa and university benchmarks.

Raw Score to Band Conversion

In the Listening and Reading components, each correct question awards 1 raw mark out of 40:

Raw Score (out of 40)Listening BandAcademic Reading BandGeneral Reading Band
39–409.09.09.0
37–388.58.58.5
35–368.08.08.0
32–347.57.57.5
30–317.07.06.0
26–296.56.55.5
23–256.06.05.0
18–225.55.54.5
16–175.05.04.0

Notice that General Training Reading requires 34 correct answers to achieve Band 7.0, whereas Academic Reading requires only 30 correct answers because Academic texts feature complex academic prose.

Official IELTS Rounding Algorithm

The four section band scores are averaged:

$$\text{Mean Score} = \frac{\text{Listening} + \text{Reading} + \text{Writing} + \text{Speaking}}{4}$$

The official British Council and IDP rounding convention is applied as follows:

  • If the fraction is less than 0.25, round down to the preceding whole band.
    • Example: $6.125 \to \mathbf{6.0}$
  • If the fraction is 0.25 or greater but less than 0.75, round to the half band (.5).
    • Example: $6.25 \to \mathbf{6.5}$
    • Example: $6.625 \to \mathbf{6.5}$
  • If the fraction is 0.75 or greater, round up to the next whole band.
    • Example: $6.75 \to \mathbf{7.0}$
    • Example: $7.875 \to \mathbf{8.0}$

Practical Worked Demonstration

Consider a candidate taking the IELTS Academic examination with the following results:

  1. Listening: 32 correct out of 40 $\implies$ Band 7.5
  2. Academic Reading: 30 correct out of 40 $\implies$ Band 7.0
  3. Writing: Assessed by examiner $\implies$ Band 6.5
  4. Speaking: Assessed by examiner $\implies$ Band 7.0

Calculate the mean of the four skills: $$\text{Mean} = \frac{7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0}{4} = \frac{28.0}{4} = 7.00$$

Since the average is an exact integer, the final Overall IELTS Band is 7.0, meeting entry requirements for premier institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Melbourne, and Toronto.

Rounding Examples in Action

  • Scenario A: $L=6.5, R=6.5, W=6.0, S=6.0 \implies \text{Mean} = 25.0 / 4 = 6.25 \to \mathbf{6.5}$ (Rounds UP to half band).
  • Scenario B: $L=7.0, R=6.5, W=6.5, S=7.0 \implies \text{Mean} = 27.0 / 4 = 6.75 \to \mathbf{7.0}$ (Rounds UP to whole band).

자주 묻는 질문

How does the official IELTS rounding rule work?

If the mean of your 4 skill bands ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band (.50). If the mean ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band (.00). If it ends in .125 or .625, it rounds down to the nearest half or whole band.

What is the difference between Academic Reading and General Training Reading?

Academic Reading uses texts suited for university study and requires fewer correct answers for higher bands (e.g., 30/40 is Band 7.0 in Academic, whereas General Training requires 34/40 for Band 7.0 due to simpler texts).

What is considered a good overall IELTS score?

Most top universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia require an overall band of 6.5 or 7.0 with no individual sub-band below 6.0. Band 8.0 or 8.5 represents a 'very good user'.

Can an IELTS band score have decimal points other than .0 or .5?

No. IELTS band scores are awarded exclusively in whole bands (e.g., 6.0, 7.0) or half bands (e.g., 6.5, 7.5). Scores like 6.25 or 7.75 are never issued.

How long is an IELTS test report form (TRF) valid?

IELTS test results are valid for 2 years from the examination date for university admissions and international immigration visas.
